ZIMBABWE. Harare: President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed his gratitude to China for donating another batch of Sinopharm vaccine and additional Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine doses on Tuesday.
In his acceptance speech at Robert Mugabe International Airport, President Mnangagwa said that the donation is another milestone in the country’s steady path to recovery.
“The continued assistance and solidarity has indeed lightened our burden in an otherwise difficult period, whilst also positively impacting the health, well-being, protection, and recovery of our people,” he said.
The President also thanked the Asian country for their expertise and the supply of personal protective equipment.
“We remain thankful to China for the support of this program. This includes the timely provision of epidemiological expertise and personal protective equipment among other aspects,” President Mnangagwa said
He also thanked the Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun, saying that he was grateful to China for its continued partnership in supplying these lifesaving medicines.
“China’s unparalleled readiness to avail access to the vaccines for commercial procurement testifies to our enhancing cooperation particularly in these times of distress and competition for resources,” he added.
Vaccination program
According to the reports, the second phase of the vaccination program will target teachers, religious leaders, the judiciary, and those with underlying conditions.
The first phase of Zimbabwe’s vaccination program commenced on February 18 after the country received the first batch of the Sinopharm vaccines.
Healthcare workers, front-line workers, and immigration officials were prioritized in the first phase of the vaccination program after the vaccine arrived.
As of Tuesday, 39,550 people had been vaccinated in the country while National Recovery Rate was at 93.4%. 31 new cases, three deaths, and 904 active cases were recorded.

Zimbabwe has witnessed a high recovery rate following continuous strict lock-down from January until the end of February.
Due to the December festive seasons, a surge in COVID-19 cases had been recorded in the country as many people traveled from outside the country to meet their relatives.
At one time, the country witnessed a triple burial of political figures on one day including the Minister of Foreign Affairs. On March 29, the country will clock one year under lock-down.
