INDIA: The YAI Senior National Sailing Championships 2023 is scheduled to take place in Mumbai, off Colaba in South Mumbai, from September 20 to September 26. This event is being hosted by the Army Yachting Node, with the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre in Mumbai as the co-hosts for this edition.
Organized under the auspices of the Yachting Association of India (YAI), this championship will see over a hundred athletes participating in ten different events, including ILCA 7 (Men), ILCA 6 (Women), 49er (Men), 470 (mixed), NACRA 17 (mixed), RS:X (Men), RS:X (Women), IQ Foil (Men), iQFoil (Women), and Formula Kite (Men). Among the participants, fifteen are women athletes from Assam, Orissa, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Racing will commence on September 22 in all classes at the Army Yachting Node.
Since top sailors from each class are participating in the Asian Games in China, this event is expected to introduce new faces as National Champions this year. The championship will be overseen by a team of qualified event officials, including World Sailing qualified International Race Officers, International Judges, and Measurers, to ensure fair competition and provide a level playing field for all competitors.
This annual regatta aims to attract more young talent, regardless of gender or class, to the sport of sailing and develop their skills for the future of Army sailing and the country’s glory.
The Army Yachting Node (AYN) was established in 2001 in Mumbai, under HQ Maharashtra Gujarat & Goa Area, and is co-located with the Naval Sailing Club at Colaba in South Mumbai. AYN yachtsmen have consistently performed well at the national level, often sweeping all the medals in various events.
