UNITED STATES. Florida: WrestleMania backlash 2021 commenced on Sunday at Yuengling center, Florida. The event kickstarted with United States champion Sheamus defeating Ricochet in a non-title fight on the WrestleMania backlash kickoff.
In the event, WWE champion Bobby Lashley also retained his title against Drew Mcintyre and Braun Strowman in a triple threat match. At the start of the fight Lashley and Mcintyre joined forces against the ‘Monster among men’ Braun Strowman. But, the Strowman express went of the rails and attacked Lashley and Mcintyre from the air to fire right back. It looked like Mcintyre was going to win the match but Lashley tossed him aside and leveled Strowman with a spear to grab the win and eventually retained his belt.
In the main event, the WWE universal champion Roman Reigns fought against the Swiss Superman Antonio Cesaro. This was Cesaro’s biggest opportunity in WWE. He fought against Reigns with all his might and even shook him with his shattering superman punch. At one moment it was looking like Cesaro was going to defeat Reigns. However, Reigns bounced back, held Cesaro in a guillotine hold and ended his dream of being the WWE universal champion. After the fight, Seth Rollins brutally beat down Cesaro who was also his WrestleMania opponent.
Meanwhile, in the tag team event, WWE smackdown tag team champions Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler fought against the father-son duo of Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio. Finally, Rey and Dominik defeated Roode and Ziggler to become the WWE smackdown tag team champions. They are the first father-son duo to win the WWE tag team championship.
In the women’s match, WWE Raw champion, Rhea Ripley fought against Asuka and Charlotte Flair in a star studded triple threat match. The match was looking very tense and it could have been anyone’s game but Ripley ultimately retained her title after putting Asuka away with her finisher ‘riptide’.
Bianca blair fought against former smackdown women’s champion Bayley. Blair was the first African-American woman to headline WrestleMania and also defeated Sasha banks in WrestleMania 37 to win smackdown women’s championship. In this match, Blair made a first successful defense of her title by pinning Bayley in a short match.
