NIGERIA. Bornu: Bornu state Governor in Nigeria, Babagana Umara Zulum has registered 1,164 children of people who were displaced by terrorist attacks into primary school.
The Governor who paid a humanitarian trip to Damask personally supervised the enrollment of the children into primary schools in the state.
Damasak is the headquarters of Mobbar local government area in northern Borno which was a former stronghold of Boko Haram insurgents before it was liberated.
Transcontinental Times learnt that the children hailed from Guzamala and Abadam local government areas in northern Borno.
The Governor appealed to the parents of the children to allow their children to attend classes saying it is very important for the children to be in school.
Displacement of the people
The children have been out of school since the displacement of their parents and guardians as a result of Boko Haram attacks.
Since 2011, Boko Haram which is one of the largest Islamist militant groups in Africa has attacked religious and political groups, local police, and the military, as well as civilians in busy markets and villages.

The Nigerian states hardest hit by the Boko Haram include Borno, Yobe and, to a lesser degree, Adawama; commerce, and these attacks have displaced many and put socio-economic activities on hold.
Borno used to be the gateway for trade in agricultural products, livestock and textiles between the whole of northern Nigeria and the neighboring countries of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Sudan, Central African Republic and even the two Congos.
The Governor’s Humanitarian Visit
The humanitarian visit to Damask by Governor Zulum began on Saturday and ended on Monday.
During the visit, the Governor launched the distribution of water pumps, fertilizer, seeds, chemicals and N5,000 each to 1,200 irrigation farmers embarking on food cultivation for dry season farming.
On Sunday, the governor supervised the distribution of food to 10,000 Internally Displaced Families.
Each family received 25kg of rice,25kg of beans, 25kg of maize and 5 litres of cooking oil.
