UNITED STATES: In an innovative partnership, five tech industry giants—Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Nvidia, and Pixar—have come together to form the Alliance for Open Universal Scene Description (AOUSD).

The alliance’s main objective is to promote and develop the OpenUSD 3D format, a cutting-edge open-source software platform used for creating 3D scenes to meet the needs of large-scale projects.

Under the umbrella of the Joint Development Foundation (JDF), an affiliate of the Linux Foundation, AOUSD will focus on standardizing, developing, and promoting 3D content using Pixar’s universal scene description technology.

This strategic move aims to foster better interoperability across various 3D tools and data within the workflow, making the process more seamless and efficient for content creators.

OpenUSD has already established itself as an essential technology for visual effects production, particularly in feature films, thanks to its optimization for handling large-scale 3D pipelines.

Pixar Animation Studios has been a driving force behind the platform’s development, and now, with the backing of Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and Nvidia, its potential for revolutionizing 3D content creation across various domains is immense.

The formation of AOUSD represents a milestone in the industry, as it combines the expertise and resources of these tech giants to create an open platform that benefits the entire 3D community.

As a non-profit organization, AOUSD welcomes participation from all individuals and entities with a shared interest in 3D content creation, offering a unique opportunity to collaborate and contribute alongside some of the biggest brands in the field.

Additionally, the announcement aligns with the rising demand for 3D technology in the entertainment industry. Cinemas have been increasingly utilizing 3D content to enhance the viewing experience, and with the emergence of groundbreaking technologies like Apple’s Vision Pro VR headset, the scope for 3D applications is set to expand further.

Vice President of the Vision Products Group at Apple, Mike Rockwell, stated that USD was “actively developed by Apple, and it is a key technology for the ground-breaking visionOS platform, as well as the new Reality Composer Pro developer tool. We anticipate promoting its development into a widely embraced standard.”
