INDIA: Today, October 15, 2023, the world celebrates World Students’ Day, a day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of the nation.
From being called the “Missile Man of India” for his contribution as an aerospace scientist to his dedication to his students as an educator, Kalam wore many hats.
The man who ignited young minds:
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, hailing from a modest background, was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, to Jainulabdeen, a boat owner, and Ashiamma. His deep-seated fascination with aeroplanes, rockets, and space emerged at a very young age.
APJ Abdul Kalam used to sell newspapers in his early days. Overcoming all the hurdles, Kalam pursued aeronautical engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) and subsequently rose to prominence in the realm of rocket and missile technology. His life journey continues to motivate millions.
In 1960, Kalam eventually became a part of the DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment team as a scientist. Nine years down the line, he transitioned to ISRO, where he played pivotal roles in various significant projects. Notably, he served as a project director for India’s inaugural Satellite Launch Vehicle and remained involved in the development of an expandable rocket project.
APJ Abdul Kalam witnessed India’s first nuclear test, known as “Smiling Buddha,” and subsequently took charge of Project Devil and Project Valiant—attempts to create ballistic missiles using the technology of the successful SLV programme.
As the years went by, Kalam emerged as a crucial figure in India’s aerospace initiatives and defence research, helping the country launch a sophisticated missile programme under his direction. His contributions to science and technology not only propelled India’s capabilities but also earned him international recognition.
APJ Abdul Kalam left behind a legacy of wisdom, humility, and an unshakeable belief in the power of dreams. His books, including “Wings of Fire” and “Ignited Minds,” continue to inspire millions worldwide. His life serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that with dedication and a clear vision, anyone can rise from humble beginnings to achieve greatness.
People’s President:
