INDIA. Noted Bollywood trade analyst, film critic, and television show host Komal Nahta recently showered his praise on Qarib Qarib Singlle actor Aman Sharma who impressed everyone with his portrayal of an Old Delhi taxi driver who takes Irrfan Khan’s character Yogi to Rajathan when he misses his train. Directed by noted Indian filmmaker Tanuja Chandra, Qarib Qarib Singlle is the story of two single individuals, a woman named Jaya and a man named Yogi, both in their late 30s, who meet each other through a website called Ab Tak Singlle. Subsequently, then go on a date to a few cities in order to know each other better.
Nahta while praising Aman Sharma also expressed his concerns about why the talented actor hasn’t landed with more roles despite delivering such a fine performance while sharing screen space with a legendary actor like Irrfan Khan. “Wonder where this fine actor, Aman Sharma, has disappeared after debuting in ‘Qarib Qarib Singlle’, with the great Irrfan Khan. Aman played a taxi driver who gives life lessons to Irrfan. Superb actor… why isn’t he doing more films or TV or web?” wrote Nahta.
Sharma expressed his gratitude to the veteran critic for acknowledging his work. “I am grateful to Komal Nahta Sir for supporting my work. I remember during the time of the film’s release also he was kind enough to mention me in his review. It’s really heartening that he still fondly remembers my performance. I had worked really hard for that role and so it is makes me feel very happy when someone of Komal Nahta Sir’s stature praises it,” Sharma told Transcontinental Times.
Qarib Qarib Singlle was the big break that Sharma was looking for and it came at just the right time for him. “I have been doing theatre since 2004 with the likes of Arvind Gaur, Raj Bisaria, Devendra Raj Ankur, Robin Das, Bani Sharad and many others. My part in Qarib Qarib Singlle was like a dream come true. The fact that it allowed me to work with Irrfan bhai (may his soul rest in peace) who is my all time favorite actor along with Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro made it that much special for more,” revealed Sharma.
But for some reason his performance despite getting a lot of praise from the critics didn’t bring him the kind of good work that he was hoping for. “For some reason it didn’t bring the kind of offers that I had hoped. Maybe some people think that playing a cab driver from Old Delhi would have been a cakewalk for an actor who hails from Delhi. Well, if it really would have been so easy why did they not hire a real cab driver? When you are facing the camera you must give your level best and when you have most of your scenes with a co-actor like Irrfan bhai then it becomes imperative that you significantly raise your bar to match his high standards,” asserted Sharma who is determined more than ever to prove his mettle yet again.
