INDIA. New Delhi: Based on a complaint from a 26-year-old woman, the Delhi Police has opened a rape and criminal intimidation case against Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s personal secretary PP Madhavan, sources said on Monday.

They claimed that the woman claimed the accused enticed her with the prospect of a job and had made marriage promises.

“A complaint was received at the Uttam Nagar police station on June 25. A case under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered. We are investigating the matter,” said M Harsha Vardhan, Dwarka Deputy Commissioner of Police.

He stated that the police were looking into the accusations made against a 71-year-old man who serves as a senior political figure’s personal secretary.

Even though the DCP omitted the political figure’s name, Delhi Police authorities claimed Madhavan was the target of the accusations.

The widow lived in Delhi, according to the officials, and her spouse passed away in 2020. They said that the husband had previously worked at the Congress party office and had attached hoardings.

The assault as described by the woman

The woman said in her complaint that Madhavan once invited her to meet him late at night in Uttam Nagar. According to the complainant, she originally objected to meeting him but gave in after he insisted.

In her police report, the woman claimed she was unable to recall the the day of the alleged occurrence.

The complainant, however, asserted that Madhavan drove his car to pick her up from outside the Uttam Nagar metro station. She claimed that after stopping at a remote location, Madhavan instructed his driver to exit the vehicle and come back only when signalled.

The woman claimed that Madhavan attacked her sexually as soon as the driver got out of the car.

She continued by saying that when she resisted, Madhavan declared his love for her and made a marriage proposal, but she rejected him. This is when, according to the FIR, he stormed out, abandoning her in that remote area of Uttam Nagar.

The woman informed the police that Madhavan apologized to her the following day and they had resumed speaking.

The woman said that the accused called her to the same Sundar Nagar apartment where he allegedly forced himself on her on another occasion in February.

“The woman claimed that every time she broached the subject of Madhavan proposing to her, he would sidestep it. She also took issue with Madhavan telling her one day that his wife suspected him of having an affair and that he would need to preserve her phone number under a different name. Madhavan allegedly stopped speaking to the woman when she challenged him,” according to a senior officer.

The woman reportedly claimed that Madhavan threatened to have her vanish if she insisted on meeting up. The officer continued, “She also claimed that he has multiple private video chat recordings that he might abuse. We are looking into this.”
