UNITED STATES: In a roller-coaster rollout, the latest Windows 11 feature update, dubbed the October 2023 Update or “Moment 4,” has brought a slew of changes, some met with applause and others raising eyebrows. Despite some hiccups, Microsoft’s renewed focus on in-box apps and utilities marks a much-needed step forward.

One notable downside is File Explorer’s performance, which is now a tad sluggish due to a hybrid code design. Yet, amidst the bumps, shining stars emerge. Microsoft Copilot, billed as the update’s flagship feature, currently feels more like a dressed-up Bing Chat, with limited functionalities beyond basic Windows Settings control.

The reliance on cloud processing makes Copilot slower compared to traditional methods, hinting at potential room for improvement. However, it’s not all gloom and doom. Microsoft Paint has undergone a transformative facelift, now boasting capabilities like transparent images, layers, and AI-powered background removal.

Likewise, the revamped Snipping Tool is a game-changer, excelling at text identification in screenshots and automated redaction of sensitive information. It now supports microphone and screen recording, streamlining tasks for users.

Dynamic lighting eliminates the need for clunky third-party apps, offering a seamless interface for customizing keyboard colours. The new Windows Backup app eases transitions to new devices, ensuring a smoother handover of settings, folders, and apps.

Public sentiment is divided, with some users lauding the update’s merits and others lamenting issues. Accessibility concerns for features like Copilot persist, echoing the sentiment expressed by Eugenio Estrada.

However, amidst the mixed feedback, there’s a chorus of approval for the update’s positive changes. The jury’s still out on Copilot, with some users finding it a game-changer for productivity, while others consider it more of a distraction.

As Microsoft irons out kinks and refines features, it’s clear that the October 2023 Update heralds a step forward for Windows 11, delivering more benefits than drawbacks for those who leap.
