INDIA: WhatsApp, the widely-used messaging platform with over 2 billion active users, has become a hotbed for scammers and hackers seeking to deceive unsuspecting individuals. The latest threat is the emergence of the notorious “WhatsApp Pink” scam, designed to dupe users into compromising their personal data.
Users are urged to exercise caution and stay away from this fraudulent scheme. The WhatsApp Pink scam operates through an embedded link in a forwarded WhatsApp message, enticing users to download what appears to be an “exclusive new WhatsApp version.”
This modified version promises a pink theme and additional features not found in the standard WhatsApp application. At first glance, the app may seem harmless, mimicking the regular WhatsApp interface.
However, beneath its innocent facade lies a sinister purpose. Security experts have revealed that once installed, the WhatsApp Pink app sets out to steal sensitive personal information from unsuspecting victims.
The app seeks access to vital data such as contact numbers, financial details, system data like One-Time Passwords (OTPs), and even the user’s contact list and gallery. These details are then exploited for malicious purposes, potentially causing severe harm to the affected individuals.
This scam first came to light in 2021 when Rajshekhar Rajaharia, an internet security researcher, took to Twitter to raise awareness about the dangers of WhatsApp Pink.
However, despite efforts to educate users, a significant number have already fallen prey to this scam. The Mumbai Police recently issued a Red Alert, urging Android users to immediately uninstall the app from their devices.
Uninstalling WhatsApp Pink can be a challenging task, as the app might not appear in the regular app list. Users are advised to navigate to their device settings, access the app list, and remove WhatsApp Pink from there.
