UNITED STATES: WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging applications, has announced that it will cease support for certain Android devices running older versions of the operating system, effective October 24. This change is aimed at maintaining the quality of user experience and ensuring security but may impact users of various brands, including Samsung, Google, Sony, LG, and more.
The cutoff point for WhatsApp’s support is Android 4.1 and older, meaning that devices operating on these outdated platforms will no longer be able to run the latest version of the application. The consequences of this change are significant and include the following:
WhatsApp Incompatibility: Starting from October 24, users with devices running Android 4.1 or older will no longer be able to use the WhatsApp application or access the latest features and improvements introduced in newer versions. This incompatibility will effectively render WhatsApp unusable on these devices.
Missed Features: Users on unsupported versions of WhatsApp will miss out on the latest features and improvements introduced in newer versions of the app. This includes security updates and other enhancements to the messaging service, potentially leading to a less satisfying user experience.
Security Concerns: Older Android devices may become more susceptible to security breaches as they won’t receive the latest safety and security updates from WhatsApp. This could expose users to potential vulnerabilities.
In response to this change, WhatsApp has a proactive approach to informing its users:
Notification and Upgrade: Users whose devices are affected by this change will receive notifications within the WhatsApp application well in advance of the cutoff date. These notifications will serve as reminders for users to either update their phone’s operating system or consider switching to a supported device.
For those impacted by this change, there are two primary courses of action:
- Update Your Phone: If your current device supports a newer version of the Android operating system, you can update your phone’s software to ensure compatibility with WhatsApp. By doing so, you should be able to continue using WhatsApp without disruption.
- Switch to a Supported Device: In cases where your current device cannot be updated to a supported Android version, you may need to consider switching to a new device that runs Android 5.0 or above. This will ensure continued access to WhatsApp and its full range of features.
It’s important to clarify that this change is exclusively applicable to Android devices. Users of iOS devices running iOS 12 or newer will continue to enjoy WhatsApp without interruption. Additionally, KaiOS users must have version 2.5.2 or newer to utilize WhatsApp on their devices.
Some of the Android devices that will cease to support WhatsApp include the HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, LG Optimus G Pro, Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire HD, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
