UNITED STATES: In a bid to revolutionize the way users communicate within groups, WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app, is poised to unveil an innovative feature named ‘Voice Chats’. With uncanny resemblances to Discord’s voice channels, this forthcoming addition promises to provide an enriched audio interaction experience for group participants.

The eagerly anticipated feature is currently undergoing testing and is available to a select group of users on the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.16.19, according to a reliable source for WhatsApp-related updates. ‘Voice Chats’ fundamentally alters the dynamics of group conversations, differentiating itself from the existing voice call and voice note features.

Unlike traditional group calls that simultaneously ring all members, Voice Chats will introduce a subtle approach. Upon initiation, a silent notification will be dispatched to the group participants, signaling the commencement of an audio discussion.

This minimizes intrusive disruptions while ensuring active participation. The current beta version restricts the number of participants to 32, though this figure may undergo adjustments during the official rollout phase.

Drawing inspiration from platforms like Twitter Spaces and Discord voice channels, WhatsApp users can seamlessly join or exit Voice Chats at their convenience. A distinctive visual cue will be triggered upon the initiation of a Voice Chat, as the group icon in the chat list transforms into a waveform icon. This icon will host a ‘Connect’ button, affording users swift access to real-time conversations via a dedicated interface.

An intriguing aspect of Voice Chats is their persistence after participants have left the conversation. These audio discussions will remain active for an hour, allowing users to rejoin without hindrance. This unique feature empowers group members to spontaneously initiate conversations whenever they desire, streamlining communication.

Notably, Voice Chats distinguish themselves from regular ‘group calls’ by eliminating the need for manual participant addition. This automated approach simplifies the process of joining conversations while maintaining the end-to-end encryption that has become synonymous with WhatsApp’s commitment to user privacy.

While the initial beta release seems to impose a participant limit of 32, there is speculation that WhatsApp might revise this minimum threshold in the future. This speculation coincides with the anticipation that Voice Chats will soon extend its availability to a wider audience, including users on the stable channel.

WhatsApp’s pursuit of enhanced features is evident from its recent testing of various functionalities. These include the ability to log in via email, send video messages, and facilitate faster chat transfers between devices without reliance on Google Drive.
