INDIA. Mumbai: The veteran stage and film actor Vikram Chandrakant Gokhale who was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune on November 5 following a multi-organ failure, passed away on Saturday afternoon.
Gokhale’s condition deteriorated on Saturday morning, and he passed away at 1.45 pm, his close friend Rajesh Damle said.
He was 77 and is survived by his wife Vrushali and married daughters Nisha and Neha. His remains will be taken to Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, and the last rites will be performed at Vaikunth crematorium.
Hailing from a family of artists, Vikram Gokhale began his career with Marathi theatre under veteran director Vijaya Mehta. Gokhale’s great-grandmother Durga Kamat, grandmother Kamla Gokhale, and father, Chandrakant Gokhale. The character played by him in the Marathi drama ‘Barrister’ was highly acclaimed. Subsequently, he acted in many plays, TV serials, and Hindi and Marathi films.
Prominent works
The roles assayed by him in Marathi films-‘Bhingari, ‘Maherchi Sadi’, ‘Lapndav’, ‘Vasudev Balwant Phadke’, and ‘Siddhant’ which received rave reviews. In 2010, he became a recipient of the National Award in the Best Actor category for his performance in the Marathi film ‘Anumati’. He also made his directorial debut with the Marathi film ‘Aaghaat.’
Gokhale was best known for his roles in Hindi films like ‘Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro’ (1989), ‘Agneepath’ (1990), ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (1999), ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ (2007), and ‘Mission Mangal’ (2019) to name a few. All these films were super duper hits at the box office back then. Viewers well appreciated the role angry father played by him in some of the movies. In June 2022, he was last seen in the Abhimanyu Dassani and Shilpa Shetty-starrer Nikamma’.
Some time back, he hosted a program called ‘Doosari Baju’, on Mumbai Doordarshan. Recently he played a role in the Marathi TV serial ‘Tujhech Mee Geet Gat Ahe’ on Star Pravah. His Marathi film ‘Godavari’ was released this month.
He bagged the prestigious Vishnudas Bhave Puarskar. He was conferred with Raja Paranjpe Life Time Achievement Award in 2016. Similarly, he won the National Award for Best Actor at the 60th National Film Awards for the Marathi movie Anumati in 2013.
His death was condoled by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, NCP President Sharad Pawar, and others.
Member of Parliament Prakash Javdekar tweeted, “Saddened by the demise of veteran actor #VikramGokhale. He was a versatile Actor as well as a committed social activist. His extraordinary performances left an indelible mark in Marathi, Hindi Theatre & Film industry. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Om Shanti!”
“Very sad to know of the demise of Vikram Gokhale Ji. I worked with him in films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Mission Mangal and had so much to learn from him. Om Shanti,” Akshay Kumar said on Twitter.
