INDIA. Bihar: In a tragic incident, a fast-moving truck rammed into a religious procession on a national highway at Nayagaon, Bihar’s Vaishali district. The incident happened at around 9 p.m. on Sunday.
The accident occurred in front of a “peepal” tree on the side of the road, where people had gathered to pray to the local deity “Bhumiya Baba.”
The catastrophe claimed 12 lives, including seven children, and badly injured numerous others.
Vaishali Superintendent of Police Manish Kumar said, “The procession was taken out as part of a custom associated with marriages. However, the truck driver was driving at a very high speed, through the adjacent Mahnar-Hajipur highway and lost control. He is stuck inside the mangled vehicle and we fear that he might have died.”
People protested, set tyres on fire, and yelled anti-government chants. The police cars were besieged by hundreds of enraged protesters who demanded justice and complete restitution for the catastrophe.
The chief minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, rushed to the location and extended his condolences. He took to his official Twitter account and wrote, “Express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery. May God give peace to the departed souls and strength to their families to bear this loss.”
Furthermore, Kumar promised financial assistance of 4 lakh rupees to those who died and free medical treatment to those who were injured.
Indian President Draupadi Murmu, wrote on her official Rashtrapati Bhawan page, “The news of several casualties, including children, in a road accident in Vaishali, Bihar, is extremely painful. I express my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this accident and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on his official PMO Twitter handle, “The accident in Vaishali, Bihar, is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.”
