FRANCE: United Nations has voiced disapproval of France’s prohibition on its athletes wearing the hijab during the upcoming summer Olympics in Paris.

When questioned about the decision to forbid French athletes from donning the headscarf during the Paris tournament, an official from the U.N. human rights office responded, “No one should impose on a woman what she needs to wear or not wear.”

Marta Hurtado, spokesperson for the office, stated that, in accordance with international human rights standards, limitations on the expression of religious beliefs, such as clothing choices, can only be deemed acceptable when they directly address legitimate concerns related to public safety, public order, public health, or morals in a manner that is both necessary and proportionate.

The remarks follow recent statements by French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, who declared that French athletes would not be permitted to wear a hijab during the Paris Games, citing a commitment to secular principles.
