UNITED STATES. President Donald Trump has officially nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. 48-years-old Barrett is currently serving as a judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Interestingly, it was Trump who nominated Barrett for this post back in 2017. In an open statement, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham confirmed that Barrett’s confirmation hearings will begin on October 12.
Barrett’s contributions to the U.S. law system
Amy Coney Barrett is an American lawyer, jurist, practicing Catholic, and mother of seven children. She adopted two kids from Haiti. Barrett is personally against abortion which is one of the key issues dominating the cultural divide in the US. Barrett has also served as a professor at Notre Dame Law School teaching constitutional law, the federal courts, and statutory interpretation.

She has taken positions backing gun rights and former President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare reform as a federal appeals court judge since 2017. Due to this, Barrett has already earned the support of many conservative activists for her approach towards the law.
Mixed responses on Barrett’s nomination
Meanwhile, many abortion rights and civil rights activists have shown concerns over Barrett’s nomination. Barrett has also been involved in several hot-button issues including abortion, gun rights, immigration and campus sexual assault in her tenure.
At just 48, Barrett’s lifetime appointment to the bench would ensure a conservative presence on the panel for decades. However, her background is completed different from the previous justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
In a statement in the White House, President Donald Trump said that Barrett was eminently qualified for the post. He also wished her luck and said, ”This should be a straightforward and prompt confirmation, should be very easy. Good luck. It’s going to be very quick. I’m sure it will be extremely non-controversial.’
