INDIA. Mumbai: Two people were killed and another person was injured when a slab of a 25-year-old four-storey residential building located in the Rabodi area of Thane near Mumbai, came crashing down on its ground floor on Sunday morning.
The slab of a flat on the third floor of ‘C-wing’ of the Khatri Apartments, came crashing down, injuring three. The injured were rushed to a local hospital where two of them died while undergoing treatment. The deceased were identified as Rameez Shaikh (32) and Goss Tamboli (38). Another injured person was being treated at a hospital, an official from the Thane Municipal Corporation’s disaster control room said.
After being alerted, a team of local firemen, police, and the TMC’s Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) rushed to the spot and pulled out three people from the debris.
The Rabodi-based housing complex collectively has 73 flats. After the incident, occupants of all 24 houses in its C-wing were temporarily shifted to Khandeshi Masjid located in Rabodi and as a precautionary measure, the “C” wing was sealed, Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) Deputy Commissioner Ashok Burpulle said.
The TMC, in a release, said that occupants were given instructions to vacate the building since it was declared dangerous after an inspection carried out in 2013. The notices were also issued, which were ignored. The building needed immediate repairs and the TMC had given three reminders to the owners of the building to get it repaired. The 85 percent repair work was completed while 15 percent was pending.

Meanwhile, Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde, who visited the site, said that the cluster development of dangerous and dilapidated buildings was the only solution to avoid such incidents. The plan has already been approved for Thane city. Now the compensation would be given as per government norms to the kin of the deceased.
