INDIA: The Family Man Season 2 is a great web series to bind the viewers to their seats and to know the hard reality of people (politicians) whom we call terrorists. It is the sequel of The Family Man (Starring Manoj Bajpayee) web series which appeared for the first time on Amazon prime video platform 2019.
Family Man Season 2 is an Indian espionage action thriller created, directed, and produced by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K.(D2R film production) who also co-wrote the story and screenplay with Suman Kumar. The series also stars Priyamani, Sharad Kelkar, Neeraj Madhav, Sharib Hashmi, Dalip Tahil, Sunny Hinduja and Sima Biswas in pivotal roles. South Indian actress Samantha Akkineni is roped in for the second season of the series. Through this series, Samantha is making her foray in the digital medium.
The storyline
The story starts with the Sri Lankan government asking Indian PM to help them nab the LTTE chief Bhaskaran(played by Mime Gopi). On the other hand, Srikanth Tiwari (Manoj Bajpayee) quits his undercover job and joins an IT firm CacheMe. With a 9 to 5 job on one hand and care for the family, on the other hand, he reluctantly manages both. Frequent scoldings from the younger boss in the office and a lukewarm response of his wife (Priyamani) test his patience. This is also the time when Sri Lankan PM ( played by Sima Biswas) is on a trip to India and seizing this as an opportunity, Bhaskaran (who is hiding in the UK) plans a meticulous attack at Chennai.
He brings in Raji (Samantha Akkineni) a well-trained LTTE soldier to kill the PM through a suicide mission. Left with no choice, Srikanth is brought back and is sent on a special mission to nab Raji. The story is girpping with lots of twists and turns. Family Man Season 2 ends with a glimpse of season 3’s subject when a Chinese cadre receives a message to go ahead with the plan at Nagaland.
Strength of the series
Firstly, the second season lives up to all the expectations and hype that were created. Be it, the acting of Samantha, Manoj Bajpayee, the action sequences, or one-liner punches like FOMO, everything is on point and thoroughly entertains you.
The show directors, Raj and DK narrate the show in such a manner that excitement levels build with each passing episode until the climax. The excellent cinematography of Cameron Eric Bryson adds a great visual experience. Bryson is known for his work in American sci-fi RoboCop, West of Her, and Eragon. The firing sequence at the police station stands tall above the rest of the action scenes.
Manoj Bajpayee starts where he had left in the first season. He is setting his own standard as far as acting is concerned. The frustration at the office, the adjustment in the home, the pain of losing his colleagues, or the action scenes, all are portrayed by him with equal finesse. He has covered the entire gamut of acting in the series. Priyamani and Sharad Kelkar are seasoned performers but they are underutilized. Sharib Hashmi, who plays Manoj’s assistant is also quite good and plays the supporting role well. His smart talks with Srikanth Tiwari bring a smile to the face.
But the real revelation in Family Man Season 2 is Samantha. Her debut in the OTT is a real gem. She is absolutely amazing in the role of Raji. With not many dialogues to say, she acts through her eyes. Samantha portrays the LTTE cadre with great panache and aplomb. She bewilders viewers with her intense avatar and the perfection in which she hides her pain and suffering looks superb. Be it her looks, body language, or stunts, Samantha is at an altogether different level here. Watch out for her scenes where she kills her boss and does those action sequences, she was amazing and you will never get to see her in such an avatar again. She has carved a niche for herself for sure.
Weaknesses
The only minus point in this series is the underutilization of the angle between Priyamani and Sharad Kelkar’s relationship. Along with this, it would have been interesting to know what happens to the ISI agent played by Darshan Kumar.
