CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC. Banjul: The Central African Republic (CAR) has declared a state of emergency after rebel forces that refused to recognize the December presidential election results, attacked the country’s capital of Bangui. Meanwhile, the opposition groups have challenged the re-election of President Faustin Archange Toudera who was re-elected for a second term of office.
“We don’t recognize the election whose winner only got 17 percent of the electorate’s vote. This does not represent the will of the people,” said the Coalition of Democratic Opposition (COD2020), in a statement.
The election had a turnout of 35 percent. According to the reports, the majority of voters didn’t cast their votes due to security reasons.
A week before the polls, several regions were attacked by the militia groups. The country’s constitutional court had reviewed the results of some candidates in several areas but noted that the irregularities could not affect the outcome of every result.
