People living in the scenic forestlands of northern California were facing a weekend of fear as huge wildfires threatened to reduce thousands of homes to ashes.

Firefighters battling the many wildfires in the west of the U.S. said the air is so dry that much of the water dropped by aircraft to douse the flames evaporates before it reaches the ground.
