SWEDEN: A devastating incident took place at Grona Lund amusement park in Stockholm, resulting in the loss of one life and causing injuries to nine individuals, including children. Eyewitnesses reported that the Jetline roller coaster experienced a partial derailment, causing riders to be thrown to the ground.
In response, Annika Troselius, the spokesperson for Grona Lund, expressed deep condolences, acknowledging the tragedy and its profoundly shocking nature.
Upon the arrival of ambulances, fire trucks, and a helicopter at the scene, the police initiated an investigation. As per official reports, three individuals suffered significant injuries, while nine others were admitted to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
Grona Lund has announced the temporary closure of the 140-year-old park until further notice. Unfortunately, immediate contact with a park representative for comment was not feasible.
Jenny Lagerstedt, a journalist, recounted her experience during her family’s visit to the park. Lagerstedt stated that she was in close proximity to the accident when she heard a metallic sound and observed the trembling of the track structure. She further disclosed, “My husband witnessed a roller coaster car, with people on board, plummeting to the ground.”
Lagerstedt added, “My children were frightened.” According to the amusement park’s official website, the Jetline roller coaster, featuring a steel track, annually accommodates over one million visitors and reaches speeds of up to 90 km/h (56 mph) with a height of 30 meters (98 feet).
Sweden’s Minister of Culture, Parisa Liljestrand, expressed utter disbelief upon hearing the news of the incident. Liljestrand conveyed her sympathies in a statement to the TT news agency, emphasizing her thoughts being with the affected individuals, as well as their families and loved ones.
