SUDAN: The ceasefire, as proposed by Sudan’s army, would be extended for another 72 hours in light of the ongoing battles with the opposition paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the suburban region of Khartoum, the capital.

On Wednesday, approval was given by the leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to prolong the armistice that would expire on Thursday. The truce has been extended for another 72 hours, and an army messenger will be sent to the South Sudan capital, Juba, to initiate conversations.

The army statement said, “Burhan thanked the IGAD and expressed initial approval for that.” The African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, have proposed ways to terminate this tense situation in Sudan, as mentioned on Wednesday in a US State Department statement.

The statement mentioned that the leadership in the African Union remained “essential in pressing the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to immediately cease military operations and allow unhindered humanitarian access.”

The fighting that commenced in Sudan on April 15 killed at least 512 people and resulted in deadly artillery attacks, rendering thousands injured and making medical accessibility difficult owing to hospitals being marred.

According to the military, the presidents of South Sudan, Kenya, and Djibouti have taken part in a proposition that incorporates the proclamation of the ceasefire by establishing a conversation between the two forces. Omdurma, a city on the northern border of Khartoum, was the most affected in the series of combats, where the RSF tackled reinforcements from other areas of Sudan.
