AUSTRIA. Spielberg: The Formula 1 BWT Grosser Preis Der Steiermark 2021 popularly known as Styrian Grand Prix will kick off today at Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. The final race is scheduled on June 27.

The new Red Bull Ring

The racetrack, homologized by FIA as “Grade A” was designed by renowned race circuit designer Hermann Tilke. A special feature of this racetrack is the difference in altitude i.e. a maximum uphill slope of 12 % and a maximum downhill slope of 9.3 %. The first half of the track boosts of three straights separated by a pair of uphill right-handers that offers the drivers reach maximum speed soon to be followed by a downhill track where the drivers work through a series of quick corners, including the much popular Rindt right-hander, named after Austria’s first F1 champion.

Moreover, the racetrack has been designed to function like two junctions that allows for a separation into a northern track with a length of 1.9 km and a southern counterpart with a length of 2.4 km.

A journey through time

The race circuit was founded as Österreichring and hosted the Austrian Grand Prix from 1970 to 1987. It was later rebuilt and renamed the A1-Ring. It hosted the Austrian Grand Prix again from 1997 to 2003 after which the circuit remained unusable for several years.  The renovated track with loads of changes reopened in the month of May 2011 with a new name “The Red Bull Ring” after it was purchased by Red Bull’s Dietrich Mateschitz. Formula One returned to the circuit in the 2014.

Given the short lap and the lack of long, sweeping corners in Austria, predicting the top ten drivers on the grid this weekend seems difficult.
