INDIA. Mumbai: During a fight over a selfie with renowned Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam at a musical event in Mumbai, police claimed that the son of an MLA shoved the singer and his two colleagues and manhandled them. Sonu Nigam, also known as “Modern Rafi,” has sung around 2,000 songs in about ten different languages.

The son of local Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Phaterpekar, Swapnil Phaterpekar, was charged by the Chembur police under Indian Penal Code Sections 323 (causing harm voluntarily), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 337 (causing harm by endangering the life or personal safety of others) in response to a complaint made by Sonu Nigam.

Nigam claimed that as he and his colleagues exited the stage following the performance, a man—later identified as Swapnil Phaterpekar—came from behind and grabbed hold of Nigam. The accused wanted a selfie with the musician.

As reported by an eyewitness, Nigam’s bodyguard came in between the two immediately, and he took the push and fell off the stairs. The behaviour of the two alleged men was so aggressive that he tried to get a hold of Sonu. However, the singer’s friend Rabbani Khan counter-saved Sonu, and he fell down seven feet from the stairs.

The video of the incident is making the rounds on the internet. The people who sustained injuries during the recent incident were admitted to Zen Hospital in Chembur and are now stable. If reports are to be believed, the boys who committed the wrongful act are MLA Prakash Phaterpekar’s goons.

In his statement about the incident, UBT leader Prakash Phaterpekar said, “Sonu Nigam was getting down from the stage when some people rushed to take a selfie. During that time, bodyguards were trying to push those people away, but by mistake, one person from Sonu Nigam’s team was pushed. Nothing has happened to Sonu Nigam.”
