UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. Despair is sweeping across the UAE as the economy continues to take a heavy blow due to pay cuts and closing of international borders.
Online donations increase. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UAE govt. has enforced strict rules ensuring the safety of its people. Most social services are currently done through electronic platforms like e-vouchers, gift cards, Instashop, Kibson, and Firstcry.ae etc. This enables more support with less contact ensuring the safety and security of volunteers.
Small donations make a big impact. Zubair Khan, a volunteer from the UAE Relief Initiative, told Transcontinental Times how small actions can make a great impact. A donation of just 10 Dhs from 10 people can prevent hunger for one family. Posts across social media have played an effective role in informing citizens of what the needs are.
Khan shares the joy of meeting like-minded people. He said, “Society got more vulnerable due to uncertainties, but then there are people out there who irrespective of their background coming forward to help people…..best example of the community spirit.” Charitable works have helped the volunteers develop a grateful, responsible, and optimistic attitude towards life.
The Joy of Sharing. Volunteering is a passionate commitment for Khan as he was raised in a family which respected volunteers. He said, “I really feel good to be able to make a small difference in someone’s life.”
Initially Khan was doing charity individually but later received an invitation to join UAE Relief Initiative. Currently the volunteers provide support through contribution of food, baby, and medical supplies and even counsel those who are facing emotional challenges.
Khan shared, “I got a request from someone to help out this guy who had a good job but unfortunately he got laid off. He was so stressed that he even wanted to commit suicide but luckily through the help of my volunteer friends, we were able to support him. He has sent me an emotional thank you video/pictures and it really made my day and encouraged me to go do more.”
“You will always find encouragement when you see the smile on the faces of people whom you have supported,” said Khan.
