INDIA.Mumbai: Six persons were killed and a few others were feared trapped as a huge portion of the slab from fifth to ground floor completely collapsed in Sai Siddhi resident building located at Nehru Chowk, Ulhasnagar in Thane district, about 53 km from Mumbai, on Friday night.
The mishap took place at about 9.30 pm when the portion of the slab came crumbling down.
Officials from the Ulhasnagar municipal corporation (UMC) and the fire brigade team reached the spot. The team of the Thane Disaster Relief Force is engaged in rescue operations along with the personnel from the UMC. Krishna Bajaj, Dinesh Chandwani, Mohini Chandwani, Deepak Chandwani, Punit Chnadwani, and Namrata Bajaj reportedly died in the mishap.
While the number of people feared trapped below the debris is not known, three to four persons are feared trapped. The slab of the 5 th floor of the building came down causing the slabs below to crash too, Santosh Kadam, Chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell said.
UMC Commissioner Dr. Dayanidhi Raja said that the notices were recently served on nearly 900 dangerous buildings to carry out a structural audit and take necessary measures to safeguard the buildings. It is to be verified whether the ill-fated Sai Siddhi building is figured in the list.
This was the second incident of house collapse within a fortnight. Five people died when a slab of the four-story Mohini Palace building was located in Ulhasnagar. camp No 1 collapsed on May 15.
