SPAIN: Sergio Busquets, one of the greatest players to ever play for FC Barcelona, will depart from the team at the end of the current campaign. In an emotional video posted to social media, he acknowledges that it has been an honour, privilege, and source of pride to wear this badge, and thanks all those who have been by his side.
Busquets joined Barça in 2005 and helped them win promotion to the Second Division B. He made his first squad debut in 2008 and quickly established himself as an essential member of the team that won six titles in a single year.
Sergio Busquets is a Barça centre-midfielder who has contributed 40 assists and 18 goals in 718 games. He is third all-time in terms of appearances in a Barça jersey and has won 31 medals of honour through his victories in eight league championships, seven Copas del Reys, seven Spanish Super Cups, three Champions Leagues, three European Super Cups, and three Club World Cups.
Sergio Busquets has been a key part of Xavi Hernández’s squad this season, playing 2,087 minutes and making four assists in 27 games. He has the chance to add another league championship to his record of achievements to cap off his final campaign at FC Barcelona.
With 48 games against Barcelona’s rivals Real Madrid, Busquets holds the record for playing in the most El Clasicos of any player. Busquets withdrew from international action last year. He has made more than 700 appearances for Barcelona.
The choice of Sergio Busquets would disappoint Xavi because the Barcelona veteran was expected to stay. He has urged the midfielder to sign a new contract and join his team for the upcoming season on numerous occasions.
Busquets will, however, be leaving because the choice has already been made. This summer, the Spaniard could possibly be on the move to Inter Miami and a few Saudi Arabian teams, according to reports.
