UKRAINE/ RUSSIA: Russia launched around 15 cruise missiles at the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday, the second strike in as many days, and air defence systems shot down all of them, officials said after air raid warnings were broadcast across the majority of the nation.
Serhiy Popko, head of the military administration for Kyiv, commented on the Telegram messaging service, saying, “As at the front, the aggressor’s intentions failed.”
The attacks on Tuesday, the fifth in May, came a day after Russia launched its largest drone swarm yet in a renewed air campaign that began ten days ago following a pause since early March.
It also occurred on Victory Day, one of Russia’s most celebrated national holidays that commemorates the day Nazi Germany was defeated in 1945.
“(They) try to kill as many civilians as possible – on this day,” said Popko.
He said that preliminary reports indicated there were no fatalities in the attack, which involved cruise missiles fired from the Caspian Sea region.
On his Telegram messaging channel, Kyiv’s mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, said that falling debris hit a house in the southwest of the Holosiivskyi neighbourhood. There were no injuries or significant property damage, he added.
Debris was discovered on the road in central Kyiv’s frequently targeted Shevchenkivskyi neighbourhood.
“Kyiv stood up again and will stand up in the future!” Popko started.
