INDIA: Ruchira Kamboj senior statesman and India’s diplomat took charge as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. On Tuesday, she presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
She is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, who served as India’s envoy to Bhutan. She is the topper of the 1987 Civil Services batch also aced in the foreign service batch of that year.
She recently took to her Twitter to announce the pride of being the first Indian woman to hold a powerful position. Making it a big affair for all females out there she wrote, “To the girls out there, we all can make it!” Earlier she tweeted: “It is my deepest honour to serve my country in this new position”.
Kamboj was the country’s first woman envoy to also served at the world body’s headquarters in New York. The lady diplomat’s predecessor Ambassador T S Tirumurti said, “Congratulations and all good wishes for your success Ruchira! @IndiaUNNewYork.”
As India’s envoy, she will have to deal with the intense pressure the country faces from all sides over its independent stance on Ukraine, with Russia neither supporting nor outright condemning it, and having to repeat its position frequently in speeches and votes at the UN. Kamboj is expected to chair the Security Council in December. She succeeded TS Tirumurti, who retired from services.
Ruchira began her diplomat journey in Paris where she was affixed in the Indian Embassy to France. Somehow she made a comeback to Delhi where she served under the secretary at the Europe West Division of the ministry of external affairs. She was in charge as the high commissioner of India to South Africa.
Kamboj brings to the UN a wide range of experience with multilateral organizations, including serving as Adviser to the Indian Mission in New York, Permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris and Deputy Head of the Commonwealth Office of the Secretary-General in London.
The Lady dynamite served in various portfolios and aced them. Her constant work and dedication made her way towards this. Like her many other woman ambassadors served at the highest rank, which includes US Ambassador- UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, United Kingdom Permanent Representative (Public Relation) Ambassador Barbara Woodward, Norway’s Ambassador and indefinite representative to the United Nations in New York Mona Juul etc.
