UNITED KINGDOM: Indian origin Rishi Sunak, former chancellor in Boris Johnson’s cabinet launched his bid to become the next UK prime minister following Boris Johnson’s resignation yesterday.
“Someone has to grip this moment and make the right decisions. That’s why I’m standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your prime minister. I ran the toughest department in the toughest time of Covid, but never compromised on my vision and will never do so in future,” Sunak said in a campaign video released on Twitter.
Sunak started the video with his grandmother’s story of how she flew from India all alone and made a life for herself and her family. “ It took her about a year to find herself a job and call her husband and son to join her in Britain.”
He is a family man married to Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy. Further, he said, “Family is everything for me, as they gave opportunities to me that they could only dream of. What we do today decided the future of our children.”
