Rethinking Our Contributions On The International Day Of Charity

A day that challenges people to consider what they are giving back to the world

Must read

UNITED NATIONS. This year marks the eighth International Day of Charity. The principal purpose of this day is to highlight and advocate the power of charity and service in mitigating philanthropic emergencies. It was in 2012 that the United Nations designated 5 Sept. As the International Day of Charity to commemorate the death anniversary of Mother Teresa.

Giving back is a way of living

Sadly, we live in a world where a few have a lot and a lot have almost nothing. There is an unequal distribution of wealth and facilities. There are many who do not have a roof over their head, food to eat, clothes to wear, and are deprived of basic human rights such as getting a quality education and choosing a career. Furthermore, the less privileged have been hit quite hard by the pandemic. Their conditions have only worsened since the outbreak of COVID-19. They need our help and support now more than ever.

Anybody can be great

Many of us are comfortable in our lives, but much of what we have could be used in the service of others. Martin Luther King Jr. once said,” Not everybody can be famous but anybody can be great. After all, greatness is determined by service.”

We live in a world where everyone craves fame. However, these outward glories are short-lived. The thing that will never fade with time is your service to society.

When it comes to charity, it doesn’t necessarily have to be monetary. Many of the younger generations are still students who depend on their families and can’t afford to give financially. However, there are numerous other ways to get involved.

Thinking outside the wallet

Let’s rethink charity by providing the needy with quick access to necessities such as groceries, clothes, medicines, and sanitary products.

It has been rightly said that teaching people how to “fish” will feed them for more than a day. So take part in the spirit of the day by volunteering to teach impoverished people. Get involved with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or host online classes for kids. Work toward empowering and educating the less fortunate about the various social, economical, legal, and environmental issues that are affecting them.

Express love, compassion, and empathy toward those challenged with poverty. Remind them that they matter and have a place in the world. Listen to their problems and be a voice for the voiceless.

Using technology to create awareness

Let’s use our social media handles not just for posting pictures, but also to create awareness among the masses. Through this creative way, one can advocate and raise funds for various charity programs.

Let us give smarter and more effectively. One can help local vendors by buying their products and giving business to poor artists. The next time you are planning a trip, travel to a country that needs your help in supporting their regional businesses. Moreover, you can purchase from them and donate those goods to their people.

Charity is often called the highest form of love. It´s quite true that fragrance always clings to the hand that gives roses. This year, we can find our area of interest and explore which kind of charity resonates with us the most. Our donations can bring new life to suffering people. Our benevolent goodwill towards humanity can always make a difference.
