In 1945, Rao published a paper in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society that was very important. This paper laid the groundwork for modern statistics and gave scientists tools that are still used a lot today. He demonstrated three fundamental results that helped shape the future of the field.

Rao has been associated with the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata since 1941 and is one of the architects of the institute. He has received many awards for his contributions to the field of statistics, including the Padma Bhushan in 1968 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
