INDIA: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has stirred controversy by asserting that China has seized Indian land. Speaking from Ladakh, where he was commemorating his father Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary, he stated that China had taken control of the territory. While some people have alleged that China’s army entered the area and occupied it, Gandhi refuted this claim, asserting that no portion of land had been taken.
Rahul Gandhi expressed dissatisfaction with the Union government’s decision to designate Ladakh as a Union territory in 2019, a status that was also granted to Jammu and Kashmir in the same year.
Despite his initial intention to visit Ladakh during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, logistical challenges prevented him from doing so, as a result of local grievances and concerns about the status that had been conferred.
The Congressman is currently in the Union territory, engaging with the youth in Leh and participating in a meeting of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council.
He is also paying tribute to the memory of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, by cycling to Pangong Tso Lake and offering his respects. People are demanding representation and advocating for governance that reflects their will.
In an effort to challenge the BJP in the upcoming Kargil council elections on September 10, the National Conference and Congress have formed a pre-election alliance. Despite not visiting Ladakh during his Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress leader instead traveled to Jammu and Srinagar.
This alliance aims to counter the BJP in the forthcoming elections, with the gathering set to occur prior to the elections, thereby ensuring a robust and united opposition.
Rahul Gandhi highlighted the well-constructed roads in Ladakh, which were developed by the Narendra Modi administration. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju acknowledged Gandhi’s remarks, emphasizing the flourishing tourism in the Kashmir Valley and the peaceful display of the “National Flag” at Lal Chowk in Srinagar.
