INDIA: In the tranquil town of Chintamani, Karnataka, a remarkable story of perseverance and triumph unfolds, led by the dynamic Principal Shalini Naresh. With her unwavering determination and innovative vision, she has transformed a fledgling school into one of the most respected institutions in the Chikkabalapur district. Her story tells the saga of her struggles, her inspiring journey, and the triumphs that define her career in education and becoming of Edupreneur.

Talking to Transcontinental Times, Shalini said that her first inspirations were her primary school Head Mistress Miss Gracy and a tuition teacher Miss Geetha. They both inculcated the value of education and steely resolutions in her.  Shalini began to show her inbuilt talent for teaching as early as in class seventh. From an early age, she had shown her teaching prowess by teaching the weaker students in class. As she saw her father T Sridhar, who was a railway employee, struggle to complete his education while working, she was determined to complete her degree and to help his father. Her mother S. Nirmala had always encouraged her to take education in English medium which was rare for the girls of the 1980s.

From grade four onwards, she was selected to represent her school in various Sports like 200m running, relay running, and Kho-Kho. She broke the stigma of girls not being considered good for Sports. She became the district champion in the 200m running competition. Despite having no shoes and proper dress to wear, she created a history of beating those who were properly trained and groomed. She then became the first girl to lead the march past her school on the occasion of the Republic Day parade. These adversaries built a steely resolve in her that would be helpful to face the challenges while managing the school.

During her second year in pos- graduation, she tied a nuptial- knot with G. Naresh who was at that time in the corporate sector. After marriage and two children on her lap, she realized that what she had dreamt of in her childhood, the time had come.

Shalini Naresh’s journey in education began with her exposure to the Bonsai Kindergarten School in Bangalore.  This experience was pivotal in shaping her understanding of the challenges and intricacies of early childhood education. Observing the complexities involved in nurturing young minds, she developed a deep appreciation for the foundational stages of learning. This early insight became a cornerstone of her educational philosophy, emphasizing the importance of a strong, supportive environment for young learners.

The Struggles of Building a School from Scratch

After Corona, the couple decided to migrate to Chintamani along with their two daughters. Upon moving to Chintamani, Shalini faced the daunting task of establishing a school from the ground up. The village, lacking adequate educational infrastructure, presented numerous challenges. From securing funds to building facilities, every step required immense effort and resilience. Shalini along with her husband, often worked long hours, juggling multiple responsibilities, and navigating bureaucratic hurdles. Even Shalini has to face the speculative parents who at that time had shown an unwillingness to send their kids to a new school. They finally rebuilt one school that was closed during the coronavirus pandemic. They started the school with only 25 students.

Despite these challenges, she remained steadfast in her mission to provide quality education. Her innovative approach to teaching, which she had begun developing during her time at Bonsai Kindergarten, became a key element in the school’s curriculum. She focused on creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment, recognizing the unique potential of each student.

Shalini Naresh’s Triumph Through Innovation and Leadership

Shalini’s innovative methods, such as incorporating technology in classrooms and emphasizing hands-on learning, set her school apart. Her unique administrative style, characterized by a participative approach, fostered a sense of community among teachers, students, and parents. This collaborative atmosphere has been instrumental in the school’s success, enabling it to achieve high academic standards and holistic development.

A former top sportsperson, Shalini also instilled a strong sports culture in the school. She believes that sports play a crucial role in character building and encourages her students to pursue athletics with passion and discipline. With her zeal and determination, the school has more than 200 students. The parents of the students are happy to send their kids to Shri Oberoi Gurukul International School, now a milestone in Shalini’s career.
