UNITED STATES: Sundar Pichai, the chief executive of Alphabet Inc., earned $226 million in total remuneration in 2022, which is more than 800 times the average employee wage, the firm reported in a securities filing on Friday.

According to the company’s filing, Pichai received stock awards worth approximately $218 million (roughly Rs 1,788 crore) as part of his salary. As Alphabet has been actively laying off employees globally, this story has drawn attention.

The Mountain View-based corporation disclosed its plans to cut 12,000 jobs worldwide in January 2022, or 6% of its total staff.

Concerns over income disparity and fair compensation practises have been raised in light of Pichai’s large wage differential with Alphabet’s median employee. The company’s decision to put executive compensation ahead of the welfare of its workers has drawn criticism from some quarters.

Employees have demonstrated against layoffs in Alphabet’s numerous offices around the world on several occasions in recent months.

The company’s plans to reduce jobs prompted a walkout by hundreds of Google workers in London at the beginning of April.

An analogous event occurred in March 2022, when staff members at Google’s Zurich offices marched out after learning that over 200 employees would be let go.

These occurrences have brought attention to the rising anger among Alphabet staff members regarding the way the business has handled job layoffs.
