NIGERIA: The need for cooperation between Nigeria and Portugal in the fields of security, oil and gas, and tourism has been emphasized by President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari’s recent trip to Lisbon, Portugal, was made public.
Buhari continued that the collaboration would go a long way toward filling the natural gas shortage in light of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.
He urged Portugal to always view Nigeria as the “best and most valuable partner” in Africa.
Oil and gas, tourism and hospitality, air transport, security, and joint commission are just a few of the industries cooperating.
Buhari stated that even though Nigeria is already a significant gas supplier to Portugal, there is an urgent need for greater cooperation in the oil and gas industries between the two nations to prevent a crisis in the demand and supply chains. This is especially true given the ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Buhari, Portugal is a popular tourist destination, which also noted the importance of fostering bilateral ties between the two nations in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
“Other areas of cooperation which are important are; Establishment of an Atlantic Research Centre, Political Consultations, Diplomatic Training, Cultural Cooperation, Investment Promotion, Chambers of Commerce Cooperation, Women and Child Development, Youth and Sports Development and Digital Economy Cooperation,” Buhari emphasized.
“Nigeria recognizes Portugal’s comparative advantages in the fields of renewable energy and pharmaceuticals, which are also priority areas for Nigeria,” Buhari noted.
However, the nation’s number one citizen from Nigeria received the ‘Great Collar of the Order of Prince Henry’ in addition to the Portuguese National Honor.
