NIGERIA. ABUJA: Addressing the age-old human resources shortage in the Nigeria Police force, the Nigeria Police force under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Idris Alkali Baba has graduated 9,989 constables from the 2020 batch of the 10,000 recruits cut across four Police Collages and 12 training schools nationwide.
The newly enlisted Police Constables have undergone Six months of intensive and rigorous training in basic, intermediate and advanced police studies. And also have engaged in physically exerting and intellectually challenging training activities that were carefully designed to transit the recruits from civilian to professional police officers with the right orientation to meet the challenges of policing an increasingly democratic and rule of the law-driven Nigerian environment.
Speaking during the Passing Out Parade in Abuja, Baba said that the recruitment and training is a way to drive home sanity in the Nigeria Police force by looking deeply into the United Nations (UN) recommendation of one police officer against 400 civilians.
The recruitment and training represent another gigantic step in the drive by the Federal Government to change the narratives of Policing by addressing the age-long labour force gap that has been inhibiting optimal police service delivery. The manpower drive aims to meet and possibly surpass the United Nations (UN) recommendation of one policeman to 400 people, IGP has said.
Baba, therefore, thanks the effort of President Mohammadu Buhari and the Chairman Nigeria Police Council for approving the recruitment exercise of 10,000 Nigerians into the Police yearly.
To reposition the Nigeria Police force to attain its internal security mandate.
Unfortunately, 11 out of the 10,000 targets set for the recruitment exercise could not complete the training, as they couldn’t meet up with the requirement set out for the training and could not pass out as Police Constables, Baba noted.
Baba added that, soon after the passing out parade, another set of 10,000 constables will resume training under the 2021 batch.
Baba, therefore, warns the recruits that the bedrock of policing is discipline. Retracted that their success as Police Officers entirely depends on the quality of their character, discipline, and professionalism. Baba, however, admonished them to resolve not to engage in any activity that will be unedifying to their good name, that of their families, and indeed the Force as they begin their policing career today. The IGP assured citizens that a new Police is being evolved to protect Nigerians with courage and serve them with compassion.
