Niger Women In The Media Celebrate International Women’s Day

Using the campaign theme Choose to Challenge, the women point out various issues affecting women in the media.

NIGERIA. Niger State: Women in the media in Niger state took time out of their busy schedules to celebrate International Women Day (IWD) alongside other women across the world.

The women who engaged in various social media campaign advocate and call for solutions to the issues which have not allowed the women to carry out their jobs effectively.

They called for a safe working environment, end to stereotypes and bias and harassment in the workspace of female Journalists asking society to be understanding of their plights.

The Campaigns

Some of the women shared their thoughts with Transcontinental Times.

A Journalist, Fatima Mohammed with the Niger State Ministry of information said she stands against sexual harassment and women insubordination in the office.

“I choose to challenge a situation where women are often seen as inferior as if they have no voice of their own and their men counterparts often underestimate the women thinking they cannot do anything. I challenge why most lead roles are being given to men when women can carry out these roles effectively.”

A Media Professional and Consultant, Aisha Wakaso noted that it is time for everyone to come together to change the narratives and stereotype against women in the workspace.

“The society has been everything but favourable to a woman, the time has come for everyone to decide that the time to change the narrative for the growth, development and wellbeing of the woman is now.”

A Reporter with Badeggi Radio, Minna, Aisha Shuiabu Badeggi said that when women are allowed to participate freely in the media, there would be an improvement in the information consumed.

“When women participate freely in media, when women make the news, and when the voices of women and girls are heard, the information we all consume improves.”

Another Media Professional, Romoke Ahmad urged the society and media organizations to stop relegating women journalists to the back role advocating for more demanding roles to be given to them as it is given to their male counterparts.

“There is the need to stop relegating women journalists to the back, more roles should be assigned to them and women should believe in their capability to deliver.”

An Information Officer, Mariam Umar challenged the continuous abuse and intimidation of women in all sectors especially women in the media.

Ruth Jiya of Raise Foundation said, “I choose to challenge discrimination against women in the workspace and every other space they find themselves. The world changes when we challenge.”

Call on Female Journalists

Female Journalists, especially the younger ones have been urged to develop themselves by attending training, seminars and conferences to keep abreast with the changing face of the media.

Media Practitioner, Aisha Wakaso stated this during a radio program to commemorate the 2021 International Women Day in Minna, the Niger State Capital.

According to her, the media is changing very fast and Journalists need to change along with the tide adding that nothing can take the place of knowledge in information dissemination.

The Managing Director of Ultimate FM, Celine Moses Alkali who said that the society demands more from women Journalist than their male counterparts urge female Journalists not to give up on their dreams and goals saying that with determination and hard work, they will achieve their dreams.

She said that female journalists should take up the tasks of handling exceptional assignment and not dodge responsibilities while emphasising the need for them to give in to mentorship.
