QATAR: Max Verstappen clinched his third World Championship title, solidifying his dominance in the 2023 Drivers’ Championship. However, the jubilation in the Red Bull camp was juxtaposed by the struggles of Sergio Perez, who found himself entangled in a multi-car crash during the Sprint race, leaving him in a “horrible situation,” according to former champion Nico Rosberg.
As Verstappen piloted his RB19 to a commendable second-place finish, securing the championship, Perez’s race took a disastrous turn. His car sat forlornly in the gravel, a stark symbol of his misfortune this season.
Rosberg’s empathetic observation highlighted the immense pressure on Perez, drawing parallels to Lance Stroll’s challenges at Aston Martin. “Watching Checo there and his interview, you can see how it’s just not fun at all,” Rosberg remarked.
Perez’s struggles raise questions about the factors contributing to his difficult season. With Verstappen’s performance at an extraordinary level, the mental toll on Perez has been substantial. The fear of being outperformed further exacerbates the situation, resulting in a negative spiral that impacts his on-track performance.
Sergio claims that it’s difficult to feel the car at times; however, one of the biggest problems he faces is the level of just Max Verstappen. Perez’s recent struggles, including a lack of Grand Prix victories since Baku, have raised questions about what has gone wrong for the Mexican driver. Rosberg attributed Perez’s difficulties to the mental toll of the performance gap and the fear that Verstappen would continue to outshine him.
As the season draws to a close, Verstappen’s dominance and Perez’s struggles remain a central narrative in the Formula 1 world, leaving fans and experts alike speculating on the potential for change in the upcoming year.
