INDIA: New Zealand reaffirmed their status as one of the frontrunners in the ICC World Cup 2023 by securing an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaran Stadium, Chennai. Chasing a target of 246 runs, New Zealand displayed their strong batting, reaching 248/2 in 42.5 overs, thanks to a remarkable, unbeaten knock of 89 runs from 67 balls by Daryl Mitchell.
The New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson, also played a pivotal role in their triumph, contributing 78 runs off 107 balls, although he was forced to retire hurt. Bangladesh, who batted first, owed their competitive total of 245/9 in 50 overs to the resilient Mushfiqur Rahim, who crafted a gritty half-century, amassing 66 runs from 75 balls, featuring six fours and two sixes.
Shakib Al Hasan added 40 runs from 51 balls to the scoreboard, including three fours and two sixes, while Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 41 off 49 balls gave their innings a good finish.
The New Zealand bowlers were also in prime form, with Lockie Ferguson spearheading the attack and claiming a three-wicket haul. Trent Boult and Matt Henry made their presence felt with two dismissals each. This collective effort dismantled Bangladesh’s top order, reducing them to 56/4 in just 12.1 overs.
Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bowl first, backing his team’s ability to chase successfully. New Zealand’s unblemished record against Bangladesh in ODI World Cup encounters continued, as they registered their fifth consecutive victory since 1999.
The playing conditions in Chennai favored spin, and Bangladesh’s spin trio, consisting of Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan, and Mahedi Hasan, was expected to play a crucial role in their quest to upset the mighty New Zealand side.
New Zealand had an exceptional start to their World Cup campaign, with commanding wins over England and the Netherlands, showcasing their title aspirations. In contrast, Bangladesh, despite a convincing victory against Afghanistan, encountered a setback in their previous match against England.
