INDIA: In the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, Netherlands defeated Bangladesh by 87 runs on October 28 at the Eden Gardens after dismissing all of the Bangladeshi players in just 142 runs with 7.4 overs remaining.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz (35), Mahmudullah (20), and Mustafizur Rahman (20) were the only batters who were able to hold out longer against the Dutch bowlers. Paul van Meekeren claimed four wickets for the Netherlands, Bas de Leede claimed two; Colin Ackermann, Logan van Beek, and Aryan Dutt each claimed one wicket.
Earlier, after Scott Edwards won a crucial toss, the Netherlands batted first at the Eden Gardens venue in Kolkata. They made 229 runs but lost all of their wickets to Bangladeshi spinners.
The top scorers for the Netherlands were Wesley Barresi (41), and captain Scott Edwards (68). Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Mahedi Hasan each claimed two wickets for Bangladesh. Skipper Shakib al Hasan scalped one wicket.
With only one victory in their five games, Bangladesh and the Netherlands have had comparable tournament paths. After their historic triumph over South Africa in their third tournament match, Netherlands has been unable to sustain their momentum. Likewise, after thrashing Afghanistan in their opening game, Bangladesh has not won a single game in the tournament.
Bangladesh, who have struggled to progress in both areas, tried to settle their playing XI after being without skipper Shakib al Hasan for the whole of the competition. In their most recent game against South Africa, Bangladesh’s shortcomings were made evident as the Proteas amassed 382 runs in their 50 overs and bowled out the Bangladesh batters for a pitiful 233 runs.
In contrast, the Netherlands looked to recover from their devastating loss to five-time world champions Australia in their most recent match. With 399 runs in their 50 overs, the Australian batters terrorised the Dutch spinners. The Dutch batting lineup, meanwhile, was under pressure after being dismissed for 90 runs in just 21 overs.
