INDIA. Mumbai: The Mumbai Police arrested nearly 250 people and took action against over 2500 erring drivers in five regions and 14 zones in a two-day all-out operation carried out as part of law and order in the city.
The operations were carried out on January 24 and January 25 under the supervision of the Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, Special CP Deven Bharti, Joint CP (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chowdhury and Additional CPs of the regions.
In the drive, Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) of 14 zones, 28 Assistant Police Commissioners (ACPs), and Senior Police Inspectors participated.
In the operation, 51 wanted or absconding accused were arrested. Besides, 100 accused were arrested after serving non-bailable warrants.
Also, the action was taken against 139 persons under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) of 1985.
In all, 41 drives were carried out to check for illegal weapons, and swords, knives, and other lethal items were seized. The raids were carried out on 70 illegal liquor joints, and 55 accused were arrested.
Similarly, the 42 externees who had re-entered the city despite the ban on their entry, were re-arrested.
Also, 114 operations were carried out under sections 120, 122, and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act 1951 (2014) against those moving suspiciously. Simultaneously, action was taken against 331 unauthorised hawkers.
The combing operations were carried out at 202 places, and the records of 926 history sheets were checked. Of these, action is being taken against 331 accusers.
Similarly, a Nakabandi was enforced at 111 spots, and 7406 two- and four-wheelers were checked, and action was taken against 2568 erring drivers.
The action was also taken against 5 drivers under the anti-“Drunk and Drive” campaign under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1939 (2019).
In all, 844 hotels, lodges, and musafirkhana were inspected as part of the drive against those staying illegally in Mumbai. In addition, 551 sensitive spots were checked.
