Mozambique President Fires Army Chief

MOZAMBIQUE. Maputo: After facing attacks by an Islamist group, Mozambique President, Filipe Nyusi has reshuffled the country’s army top leadership.


The attacks are occurring in the Cabo Delgado province where there is major natural gas plant.

In a statement, the President’s office said Eugenio Mussa had replaced Lazaro Mwenete as Chief of staff.


Mussa was commander of ground forces fighting the insurgency in Cabo Delgado.

Last year, a Jihadist group locally known as Al-shabaab attacked four towns including the port of Mocimboia da Praia which it has occupied since August 2020.


2400 lives have been lost due to the fighting and 570,000 fled their homes according to the state news media.

Of those killed, half are civilians, according to ACLED, an NGO which collects data relating to armed conflicts.


Mozambique earlier faced an internal conflict from 1977 to 1992.
