INDIA: North India has been hit by heavy monsoon rainfall, resulting in severe flooding, landslides, and flash floods. Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh have witnessed exceptionally high levels of rainfall, breaking records from the past four decades. The torrential downpours have caused significant disruptions, including the loss of lives and extensive damage to infrastructure.
In Uttar Pradesh, at least 34 people have lost their lives in the past few days, with some deaths attributed to heavy rains and others to lightning strikes. Himachal Pradesh has been severely affected, with 72 reported fatalities due to the devastating natural calamities. The state has suffered an estimated loss of Rs 3000 crore during this monsoon season.
To provide relief to the affected families, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a flood relief package of Rs 4 lakh for those who have lost their earning members due to flash floods and heavy rains in the state. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has also acknowledged the massive loss incurred by the state and assured support for the affected areas.
Popular tourist destinations such as Manali, Shimla, and Kullu have been among the worst-hit districts. Landslides have occurred in places like the Spiti Valley, leading to casualties and tourists being stranded. Rescue operations are underway to help those affected by the natural disasters.
The rainfall is expected to continue throughout the week in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with the Chief Ministers of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to assess the situation and ensure the provision of necessary assistance and support from the central government. Efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the ongoing monsoon and provide relief to the affected regions.
