Drug cartels have been engaging in bloody wars for control of the state’s borders and trafficking routes. A video taken shortly after an incident showed dead bodies near a swimming pool, with an unidentified male saying “Heavily armed sicarios arrived.”
The attack in Cortazar, 65 kilometres south of Guanajuato, was sparked by a shooting at a resort surrounded by palm trees.
A video taken shortly after the incident shows a poolside pile of dead bodies. An unidentified male can be heard saying, “Heavily armed Sicarians arrived, and this is what happened,” while filming inside the resort.
Police officers and the Mexican military used a helicopter to try to find the fugitive gunmen. The attack began at around 4.30 p.m. local time (10.30 p.m. GMT).
Guanajuato, in central Mexico, has seen an increase in drug-related violence due to the ongoing war between the Santa Rosa de Lima criminal organisation and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Since the government sent the military to fight the cartels in 2006, there have been over 350,000 homicides in Mexico, most of which have been blamed on criminal groups.
In a statement, Cortazar’s security division said that although the perpetrators escaped after the attack, they did not do so before damaging the resort store and stealing the surveillance cameras and monitor.
