Max Verstappen Wins the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022

With this win, Verstappen now has 66 podiums in F1

AZERBAIJAN: Max Verstappen has won the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix, beating fellow teammate Sergio Perez, who had the fastest lap of the race at The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya located in Montmelo, Barcelona, Spain.

Mercedes driver George Russell of Britain secured third place. This was Verstappen’s fourth victory this season.

With this win, Verstappen now has 66 podiums in F1 and he leads the 2022 Driver Standings with 110 points, while Leclerc is placed second with 104 points and Perez comes third with 85 points.

Both the Ferrari drivers Leclerc and Carlos Sainz retired midway with their cars suffering problems. Leclerc started from the pole but Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez overtakes him in the first corner. Though Leclerc regained lead but eventually had to retire due to engine failure.

AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly secured the fifth position, ahead of Aston Martin’s four-time former world champion Sebastian Vettel. Fernando Alonso finished seventh for Alpine, ahead of McLaren drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris teammate Esteban Ocon who secured 10th position.

“I reckon we’re losing 1sec per lap with this bouncing and once we fix it we’ll be right there in the race,” said Sir Lewis Hamilton.

“I am more than frustrated,” Leclerc said. “The first stint we weren’t particularly strong at the beginning but then I was catching back Checo. I think pitting was the right choice. We were leading and then I was managing the tyres well. We just had to manage the tyres to the end and we were in the best position to do that. Another DNF. It hurts.”

About 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and Baku City Circuit

The 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, took place over 51 laps of the 6.003 km Baku City Circuit on Sunday, June 12. The first Grand Prix known as the European Grand Prix was held in Baku in 2016 followed by the inaugural Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017. The Baku City Circuit is a mixture of contrasts. The track after moving straight along the coastline and loops around the city’s old town.
