ITALY: Maserati has unveiled its highly anticipated MC20 GT2, marking the Italian marque’s first foray into this arena since the iconic MC12 GT1’s victorious campaign in the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship. Piloting this modern marvel will be the seasoned duo of Leonardo Gorini and Luca Pirri, ushering in a new era for Maserati motorsport.
Underpinned by the formidable 3-litre twin-turbocharged Nettuno V6 engine, identical to its road-legal counterpart, the MC20 GT2 underwent meticulous development under the watchful eye of Italian engineering firm YCOM.
Nicola Scimeca, the managing director at YCOM and former head designer of the MC12 project for Dallara, spearheaded the transformation, ensuring the MC20 GT2’s legacy was firmly rooted in its illustrious predecessor.
Andrea Bertolini, a stalwart of Maserati’s racing history, took on the role of lead test driver. With four titles spanning the eras of FIA GT and GT1 World Championships during his six-year tenure with the MC12, Bertolini brings a wealth of expertise to the team.
LP Racing, a stalwart in pro-am lineups, enters the fray with three Audi R8 LMS GT2s, adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming GT2 European Series.
These potent machines, characterized by heightened power and reduced aerodynamic reliance compared to their GT3 counterparts, are set to redefine the competition.
Luca Pirri, the team principal of LP Racing, expressed his enthusiasm for this historic partnership with Maserati, describing it as an opportunity too enticing to overlook.
His co-driver, Leonardo Gorini, brings both camaraderie and exceptional skill to the table, having vied for the 2023 Am class title in the GT2 European Series.
After two days of rigorous testing, Pirri exuded confidence in the MC20 GT2’s untapped potential, praising its user-friendly nature. With its remarkable blend of power, agility, and driver accessibility, the Maserati GT2 is poised to carve its name in the annals of GT racing history. This resurgence of Maserati in the GT arena promises an exciting chapter in the world of motorsport.
