UNITED KINGDOM: After a challenging start to the 2023 season, eight-time world champion Marc Marquez has found a renewed sense of confidence by adopting a different approach during recent races.
Despite enduring a tough first half of the campaign, Marquez’s focus shifted towards building a solid foundation for his performances rather than chasing immediate results.
During the first eight rounds of the season, Marquez managed to score just 15 points while facing a series of setbacks, including missed races and multiple crashes. This led to uncertainty about his future with Honda. However, Marquez affirmed his commitment to see out his current contract during the Silverstone weekend.
For the most recent race, Marquez decided to prioritize refining the base set-up of his RC213V rather than aiming for podium finishes. This approach led to him qualifying in the 14th position and finishing the sprint in 18th place. Marquez’s altered strategy paid off, as he was able to rebuild his confidence and work on finding a stable setup for his bike.
Despite a modest qualifying position, Marquez demonstrated improved performance during the race, briefly running as high as 10th before being involved in an unfortunate collision with Enea Bastianini of Ducati. Marquez’s race ended prematurely due to the incident, but he maintained a positive outlook on his approach.
Marquez expressed his contentment with the weekend’s progress, stating, “I rebuilt the confidence, but to find the base, we need more races, more race tracks, different situations.” He emphasized riding based on feeling rather than being fixated on times, which enabled him to push when he felt comfortable and avoid unnecessary risks.
Elaborating on the collision with Bastianini, Marquez explained that he was caught off guard by a slight drizzle and chose not to take unnecessary risks. Despite the crash, Marquez viewed it as a racing incident and noted that his confidence remained intact.
In adopting a more methodical approach focused on gradual improvement, Marc Marquez has showcased his resilience and determination to overcome challenges. As the season progresses, his commitment to refining his bike’s setup and regaining his competitive edge signals his intent to return to the forefront of motorcycle racing.
