UGC Chairman Assures Teachers To Address Their Issues

INDIA. Mumbai: The delegation of Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM), a teachers’ organisation, recently called on the University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. M. Jagdish Kumar in New Delhi and discussed various pending issues related to education and teachers.

Giving information in this regard, the President of the ABRSM, Professor JP Singhal said that teachers’ stand was elaborated on pending issues like uniform implementation of UGC Regulations 2018 across the country, implementation of the report of the Anomaly Redressal Committee etc.

In the meeting, the issues such as exemption from PhD entrance eligibility test and provision of paid leave for PhD course work or online arrangement in asynchronous mode for in-service teachers, an extension of the service period of college principals till retirement age, issuance of year wise list of journals of UGC Care list and its transparent expansion were discussed.

Also the issues such as regular appointments on vacant posts of teachers in universities and colleges, an extension of the applicability of UGC Regulation 2010 for Career Advancement Scheme by 3 years, and making service conditions and retirement age of other academic staff of higher education institutions at par with teachers were also discussed.

Various aspects of the National Education Policy were also discussed and the attention of the UGC was drawn to the difficulties faced in its implementation at the ground level by the ABRSM.

Prof M Jagdish Kumar took cognisance of the points presented by the ABRSM and assured the required action. He said that action is being taken on the recommendations of the Anomaly Redressal Committee and soon the results will be seen in the interest of teachers.

In the meeting, UGC Secretary Prof. Rajneesh Jain, ABRSM’s Organisation Secretary Mahendra Kapoor, Co-Organisation Secretary G Laxman, Higher Education wing In-charge Mahendra Kumar, Additional General Secretary Dr Narayan Lal Gupta, All India Secretary Dr Geeta Bhatt, and Joint Secretary Dr Pradeep Khedkar were also present.

Subsequently, the ABRSM also called on Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and discussed similar issues with him. The issues included a need to remove difficulties faced by the digital divide and set the limit for digital and online education, the need to impart primary education in the mother tongue, and voting rights for primary teachers in the state legislative council were discussed.
