A police tactical unit swiftly secured the mall, while another unit was dispatched to ensure overall safety.

Prior to 8 p.m. MT, a woman directed customers to remain inside a Foot Locker store, where a security guard locked the entrance.

For an hour and a half, Sean Fowler, among other customers and employees, remained in a room located at the back of the store. During this period, lights dimmed, and internet connectivity became sporadic.

Despite these conditions, individuals remained composed until the restoration of lighting. At 9 p.m., they were allowed to exit without any instances of panic or distress.

Having recently evacuated Yellowknife due to a significant wildfire, Fowler drove to the mall with only a few clothing items in his possession. His intent was to shop for footwear and trousers when he found time, in light of the evacuation.

The shooting incident occurred within Phase 3 of the mall, prompting the closure of a section. As of now, police have not made any arrests, and the investigation is in its preliminary stages.

Daniel Tames, speaking on behalf of the Edmonton Police Service, revealed that the parties involved are familiar with one another, characterizing the event as a targeted incident.

Tames reassured that the neighborhood is not presently at heightened risk. Additional information will be provided in the coming days.

To counter misinformation concerning the shopping mall shooting, the Edmonton Police Service issued a warning and advised individuals to avoid the area on Monday night.

Temporary closure of the mall’s transit center led to bus relocations nearby. This adjustment resulted in delays for specific transit routes.

West Edmonton Mall acknowledged the occurrence of the gunshot but referred inquiries to the Edmonton police. Renowned for attracting over 30 million visitors annually, the mall boasts more than 800 stores and service outlets.
